I always laugh when people find out I’m a writer and say things like, “I always wanted to write” or “That sounds like fun.”
Fun, yes, occasionally. Satisfying, certainly. Frustrating, though… yeah, those people never think about that part.
99% perspiration, 1% inspiration, is (though cliche) more accurate.
Ain’t it the truth. And people also don’t seem to understand that it isn’t a steady thing because you really do have to be in a certain headspace, which means short bursts of productivity and the rest of the time is spent staring at nothing, pacing, or haranguing one’s muse, adding one measly word at a time. Gah. You work when you can, and try to ride the wave when it’s there.
Discipline is crucial; if you’re not sitting there to do it it’s not going to get done at all, of course, but even then it doesn’t always happen successfully. I am envious of writers who can sit down and write three pages every single day before breakfast, and no more. Slow and steady. It’s incredible.
