Finished the first pass through the proofs! Now I have to go back and check the notes I made, and re-read the first half to make sure I’ve caught errors I found later. (A ‘censor’ is not needed for a ritual involving incense, whereas a ‘censer’ is. Am I ever glad I caught that one.) And now I’m wibbling about my ruthless elimination of commas for invocations in the latter half of the book; they do work well in some instances. Sigh.
I read a paragraph and choked up. That’s never happened before.
A censor, in the Roman sense of one who supervises public behavior might be useful for any ritual. Keep people on task, and such. But I don’t think they’d smoke very well, you’re right.
I stick with the word thurible myself. That way i don’t get confused, which is happening more and more.
See, for me a thurible is a very specific kind of incense burner, one of the ones that hangs from chains and can be swung, which is why I don’t use the term.
I remarked to Ceri when I caught the typo that while most of us always have our damned inner critic along for the ride, it is certainly not an essential part of an experience that ought to be criticism-free.
