Blissful Ignorance

I just discovered the Autosum button in Microsoft Excel.

I have used this program for over ten years, and only just found this function.

I am speechless.

(Well, all right, so I’ve been using it for databases of words and sentences all that time, not numbers. But still. You think it’s something I would have tripped across before today, when I needed to add a column of figures and didn’t want to pull out my calculator.)

Excel just about tops my list for unusable software. I remember one time years back when I needed to print a table with a bunch of names and numbers in it. After 10 minutes of being frustrated by Excel, I did it with hand-coded HTML because it was easier and faster for me… OTOH, I was similarly frustrated by my total inability to get the ‘crop’ tool to work until I finally learned about the “Make it so” (aka ‘apply’)button.

I must admit I know the autosum (and subtract)in Excel, but I will be damned if I can ever get the percentage formulas to work.
