Brief Liam Update

We have been pretty miserable here for the past few days. Liam’s been waking up every two to three hours at night in full howling end-of-world mode. Sometimes we can get him back to sleep, sometimes not. This morning began at 4.30, and the three of us walked through the day like zombies. The appetite is more miss than hit. So he’s a crank because his food and sleep are off, and we’re cranky because he’s not eating or sleeping normally, which means we’re not sleeping properly. Plus the fact that he’s a crank wears us down too.

He’s still a good kid. He’s just going through something, whether it’s teething or working out a new schedule for himself with only one nap, or working through night terrors. We’re just very, very tired, and out of energy to deal with pretty much anything.

However:

New words this week: “peekaboo”, “socks”, and the sound of a rooster crowing.

New food: leeks. (The verdict? Pretty decent.)

New actions: waving bye-bye when people are actually saying bye-bye, fitting two single MegaBloks together, opening the crank-powered windows in his room, setting bath ducks on a shelf. There are more, I’m just so wiped I can’t think of them.

And a new photo for you all, because it’s been a while:

(Scarlet had brought down some Harry Potter stickers that day, and Liam had one on his forehead for a few hours. In some way it feels like we’ve come full circle from this photo!)

Today he played my cello (remarkably well; I moved my fingers to make different notes, and he bowed), and played HRH’s bodhran for the first time too.

I was in bed at six last night. Tonight I may make it all the way till eight.

It’s autumn, a season of light and dark, endings and beginings, joy. . . and crankiness. It all sorta fits, don’t it?
Anyway, I’m sorry you guys are having a rough time of late, and I hope the bad stuff gets better soon. Last night, in my body’s effort to fight off yet another sinus infection, I slept for twelve hours straight. I still have the infection, but there’s nothing like a good rest to make it all a bit more bearable.
Mabon blessings to you all, and a wish for a good night’s rest as well, and that “the cares that infest the day,/Shall fold their tents, like the Arabs,/And as silently steal away.”

Oh… and as far as odd occurrances that may throw people off… Friday was a solar eclipse, Saturday (today) is the dark moon AND actual Fall Equinox AND Rosh Hashana (sp?).

Hang in there. It does get better, and when reviewing what you’ve already gone through… it is better. There is quite a lot of change in the air, and we feel it too here. I think we’re merging into one nap from two soon, as two just becomes a tear-fest for the first 1/2 hour and then 15 minutes of yuck sleep. Not enough to get much done and mucho crankiness follows for the rest of the day.

I admire the little miracles that our son’s are going through. We have a new pet in our household, and the delight in the eyes of Josh as Merigold comes around the corner… he suddenly turns into a playful puppy. If he had a tail, he’d wag it. But he does say “kit cat” and “mew” at Merigold and then tries to grab her playfully. Of course he’s so very clumsy these days, he can’t quite get there yet. Watching him walk is much like watching a drunk penguin. But although these are hard days to get through, they do get better.

Not to use an analogy too much here, but like Mabon, enjoy Liam as the fruits of hard labour are revealed. He’s blossomed into a handsome young boy, and there will be many seasons more to watch him change his colours too.

I laughed so hard at this that I almost spilled my drink! That’s exactly what it’s like!

Last Monday after finishing upstairs at Scarlet’s, I was blessed with a viewing of the royal wee one from your patio doors as I got into my car. I waved and made faces and he seemed to be giggling a bit.
Toddlers and phases…. they go hand in hand. I was hugely sleep deprived after Ben because he wouldn’t sleep. Cameron was a swettie of a sleeper but it still took be a looooooong time to recover (if i have!!?)
And YES drunk penguins are the perfect simile for toddlers toddling! Cameron was like a waddling sumo wrestler too. A sumo wrestling drunk penguin! Hugs!
