Argh!

The bread machine is dead.

Good thing I asked for a stand mixer for Yule, because that whole fibro thing, where I don’t have enough power in my hands to, you know, knead bread as long as is necessary? Yeah. That.

I think we’ve lost a bit of metal from the bottom of the mixing pan. The motor turns, but it’s not engaging with the bit that turns the blade inside the pan; it just scrapes across the bottom. I seem to remember a ring or something on the bottom of the pan that’s no longer there.

The loss of the breadmaker isn’t the end of the world. I’ve made at least one loaf of bread a week with it since I bought it over a year ago, more often two or three. The main reason I use it is because I can’t knead. Often I use it to knead the bread and the first rise, then I take it out and use a regular loaf pan in the oven. So as I paid under fifty dollars for it, if it’s not salvageable I’ve still saved money over the past thirteen months, even taking into account the cost of the breadmaker, the ingredients, and the electricity. Plus the bread has been awesome.

I’ll look into repair. I’d hate to toss it in landfill somewhere.

I hate it when small appliances die, since it’s usually impossible to repair them and you end up with this lump of metal-and-plastic that has to be landfilled. The motor burned out on our blender, and we had it hanging around the house for months, because we kept saying “Maybe we’ll find someone who can fix it, or who has a use for the jug at least, or…” We finally chucked it as part of the move.

I’m going to let HRH take a look at it. If he can’t figure it out at work, yes, it will likely get chucked, likely in that wonderful appliance/electronics graveyard you told us about when you looked for/dropped off your handheld mixer. Which saddens me.

Is there not a place to dispose of stuff like this where they can at least be used for scrap metal? I know there are electronics recycling places, but not small appliance recycling (I have two small appliances in my house, not mine, that have to be got rid of).

Last night I decided I was perfectly capable of making a quadruple batch of Russian Pecan Tea Biscuits. This, it turned out, was a LIE. My forearms STILL hurt and I don’t even have an underlying condition. I can’t imagine the agony it would be if I did. Yikes. God bless mixers!
